Vinland Music was started by Eric West in 1989. We publish arrangements of Newfoundland and Labrador music, including folk, contemporary and popular songs. Our publications are used by amateur and professional musicians, choirs, and music teachers. They can be found in schools, private music academies, and universities. All our products are produced entirely in Newfoundland and Labrador. A list of those currently in print can be found here.
Vinland Music also composes and produces music for video, film, CD-ROM, stage and radio. We have collaborated with a variety of musicians, photographers, and playwrights from all over Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Vinland Music Camp was started in 2000 at Lomond, in Gros Morne National Park. This annual event is dedicated to teaching and preserving the music of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is open to all ages (8 years and up) and teaches a variety of acoustic instruments as well as folk dancing, song writing and story telling. The Camp is now run by the Soundbone Traditional Arts Foundation – a non-profit organisation.
Vinland Music also develops learning resources for educational purposes, including for the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education. In 2005 it produced Songs of Newfoundland and Labrador – School Edition for classroom use. In 2007 Jane Rutherford and Eric West collaborated to produce Traditional Dances of Newfoundland and Labrador – A Guide for Teachers (booklet and DVD). Both resources are used by schools throughout the province.
